IS IT ALLOWED TO WORK ON THE SABBATH ?
The Sabbath is a very important day in the Bible. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, this day is presented as a special time dedicated to God. Many believers wonder whether it is acceptable to work on the Sabbath. To answer this question, it is important to examine what the Bible teaches about rest and the purpose of this day.
THE ORIGIN OF THE SABBATH
The Sabbath first appears at the beginning of the Bible. In Book of Genesis 2:2–3, it is written that God finished His work of creation on the seventh day and rested. The Bible also says that God blessed the seventh day and made it holy.
This shows that the Sabbath was established from the very beginning of the world. It was not only for a particular nation but represents a divine principle of rest and fellowship with God.
THE COMMANDMENT NOT TO WORK
Later, God gave the Ten Commandments to the people of Israel. In Book of Exodus 20:8–10, the Bible says:
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.”
This passage clearly shows that God set aside six days for work, but the seventh day is meant for rest. The purpose is to allow believers to step away from their daily activities and focus on God.
THE SABBATH AS A DAY OF BLESSING
The Sabbath is not only a day without work. It is also a time to pray, read the Bible, and spend time with God. In Book of Isaiah 58:13, the Bible encourages believers to honor the Sabbath and consider it a delightful day.
This means the day should be used for spiritual activities and for strengthening the relationship between believers and God.
THE TEACHING OF JESUS
In the New Testament, Jesus Christ also spoke about the Sabbath. He showed that the Sabbath should not become a burden for people. In Gospel of Mark 2:27, Jesus said:
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”
Through these words, Jesus explained that the Sabbath is a gift from God intended for the good of humanity.
Jesus also taught that it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath, such as helping someone in need or showing compassion to others.
CONCLUSION
According to the Bible, the Sabbath is a day dedicated to rest and to God. The Scriptures encourage believers to avoid ordinary work so they can devote time to prayer, worship, and spiritual reflection.
The Sabbath reminds believers that God is the Creator and that He desires His people to find rest in Him. It is therefore a special day that invites everyone to draw closer to God and renew their faith.
